The Live Music venue in Newport Keys has been sitting vacant for a while now. Unfortunately it has been sitting vacant due to the changes in the RL economy that have been felt in SL as of late. We understand that one of the great perks of Newport Keys is its two fantastic live venues - the Newport Keys Amphitheatre and Park and the intimate stage inside Club miX. We also LOVE being able to showcase the amazing Live Artist talent in the very diverse and global community of Second Life. Finding a live artist is not as difficult as coming up with the funds to actually BOOK the live artist. In the beginning we could splurge a bit and have some amazing artists - starting off our very short season with an appearance by "Second Life's Premiere Rock Performer" Mankind Tracer. But then the NK Live Event coffers ran dry and the Newport keys Amphitheatre stayed dormant except for a few sim events staged by the staff. There had even been talk of simply replacing the venue with more merchant space - a heartbreaking thought for those that build and loved the venue. We have had requests from artistis to play, but have been unable to drum up the extra resources to host them. Each request had to be politely declined.

Yesterday, Makind Tracer sent Audra a cheery, and familiar IM about booking dates and Audra set up her usual polite decline due to funds, almost choking with sadness because we were unable to raise the funds to host any artist at the moment, let alone the "only Super Star Rock Artist in SL". His response to her rejection was suprising... Mankind was willing to play for a cover charge - if no one showed up, he would still play - for free. A common practice in the Real World, but virtually unheard of in Second Life, Mankind would receive his payment based on ticket sales, and not a flat fee. Why would he bother to do this as he was very sucessful on the "normal" method of live artists in Second Life? Its simple, he told her - Live Event venues are closing up and tearing down because they're unable to keep up the fees to hold a live event - to put it straight, Live Event venues, while popular, are simply money drains on their owners - with no guarentee on a return for their investment. People will pay 1000L$ for a pair of shoes, but won't pay for a live event. We challenge you to show your support for Live Artists AND the venues that host them. How can you do this? Help support Mankind Tracer in his effort to balance the scales and help the struggling Live Event Venues in Second Life and help support Newport Keys in our effort to bring Live Music in Second Life back to the forefront!
